It's said that this strange device called "Koubouku" can create a dark, bizarre world by influencing the subconscious of its test subjects.
After using the device, the protagonist falls into a closed space filled with foul water, where crumbling wooden buildings and rusted metal also lie.
He also discovers that his body has transformed into a shell somewhere between machine and living thing.
The protagonist wanders this world, complex as a maze, seeking only an exit to escape from this place.
"Koubouku: Nightmare Adventure" is a PC adventure game released in 1999. In this game, test subjects who use the mental treatment device enter their own inner worlds; after using it, the protagonist becomes a grotesque biomechanical being, and the player's goal is to escape this world. Because of its peculiar worldview, Japanese players have hailed it as one of the "Three Twisted Games" and the "Three Bizarre Games."
This game is fundamentally an exploration adventure built around puzzle-solving, but it also contains many RPG elements, such as body-modification player growth features and a deep fishing system. Its story also makes players ponder the dual meaning of escaping this world and staying in it.
One of "Koubouku"'s hallmarks is its meticulously detailed worldbuilding. In the game, energy cycles, ecosystems, and the formation of the world are tightly interwoven and presented one by one through the game systems, realizing a richly colored otherworldly feel. Even though this is not a horror game or a tearjerker, the above settings and systems give the entire game a singular sense of dissonance and unease.
This mobile-device remastered version, besides recreating the original, has had almost all graphics retouched and corrected, with improvements to the user interface and game balance, and it also adds brand-new chapters, side quests, and multiple endings.
